Research Committee Report

Changing Social Culture and Evolving Business Management”

FY2008 JKA-Supported Program

Amidst ongoing globalization, complicated socio-economic problems such as climate change, financial crisis, resource scarcity and food shortage have been unfolded across the border. While in Japan, multiple social concerns came to surface with corroding corporate ethics, product safety, ageing population with fewer children, unstable employment patterns and widening income gaps, to name a few. These are common global agendas that should be addressed not only by states, international organizations but by corporations across the world. Thus, corporate activities have become increasingly significant for public benefits and welfare.

Against the backdrop, GISPRI has held the research committee on “Changing Social Culture and Evolving Business Management” since 2007, in an attempt to deepen discussion in relation to corporate social responsibility (CSR), corporate philosophy, work environment, Japanese culture, industries and so forth, focusing on the key to sustainable excellent companies.

Moreover, GISPRI commissioned a research entitled “Changing Social Culture and Evolving Business Management” to help contribute to the discussion. The nineteenth GISPRI open symposium entitled “What People Expect for Sustainable Companies?” was held in February 2009.

For the past few years, it has become a mainstream idea that CSR is central in corporate management. Also, the number of companies that publish their CSR reports (social and/or environmental reports) has been on the increase. CSR should not make a temporary fad but a long-sustaining requirement for companies. Therefore, we will be very pleased if this report could provide a food for thought about CSR to readers.

Lastly, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all of those who have contributed to the research committee: Mr Ide, who has shown great leadership as Chairman for the last two years, all other members, guest speakers of the committee, presenters and panelists at symposium and all other people who have offered us cooperation in making this research.
